Mount Meru, standing at 4,566 meters, is Tanzania’s second-highest mountain and a hidden gem for trekkers. While often overlooked in favor of Kilimanjaro, this dormant volcano offers a spectacular climb filled with stunning scenery and wildlife. The trek usually takes 3 to 4 days, making it an ideal warm-up for Kilimanjaro or a thrilling adventure on its own. Starting in Arusha National Park along the Momella Route, the journey is guided by an armed ranger and passes through rich ecosystems—from verdant forests to high-altitude deserts. Along the way, you might spot giraffes, zebras, monkeys, and more. The final push to Socialist Peak follows the edge of the crater, treating you to panoramic views and a chance to see the ash cone left by the 1910 eruption. Though less crowded than Kilimanjaro, Mount Meru is still a challenging trek that requires good acclimatization to reach the top.
