When to Visit Tanzania

When to visit Tanzania For Safari Adventure

The best time to visit Tanzania depends on what wildlife you’d like to spot. The country’s seasons and wildlife numbers are dictated by the rains, so you’ll have a slightly different experience depending on when you choose to visit.

Tanzania’s headline attraction is the Great Migration, which occurs year-round across the Serengeti. Many people flock here between July and September for a chance to witness huge herds of wildebeest and zebra crossing the Mara River — panic ensues as they try to avoid the jaws of crocodiles and other predators waiting to pounce. You’ll see lots of vehicles in the park at this time of year, though.

Tanzania’s ‘green season’, between November and March, is much quieter. While there’s a chance of rain showers, it’s a fantastic time for birdwatching as migratory species arrive in their thousands. You’ll also see Great Migration herds with their newly born calves.

Month By Month - best time to visit Tanzania?

Tanzania is one of the most rewarding safari destinations, as it can be visited throughout the year. However, the most ideal time for wildlife viewing is during the dry season, from June to October, when animals are easier to spot and the famous wildebeest migration reaches its peak. Below is a month-by-month guide showing the best times to plan your safari experience.

When to See the Great Wildebeest Migration in Serengeti

The best time to see the wildebeest migration in Serengeti National Park depends on where the herds are moving throughout the year. From December to May, they gather in the southern Serengeti and Ndutu plains for calving season, when thousands of baby wildebeest are born and predators are very active. Between May and July, the migration heads toward the Western Corridor, where you may witness crossings at the Grumeti River.

From July to October, the herds move to the northern Serengeti near the Mara River, famous for dramatic river crossings. In October and November, they begin their journey south again. Since the migration follows rainfall patterns, timing can change slightly each year, but wildlife can be seen in the Serengeti all year round.
