When To Climb Kilimanjaro
Best Time To Climb Kilimanjaro
When deciding on the best time to climb Mount Kilimanjaro, several important factors come into play, including temperature, visibility, trail traffic, difficulty, and overall safety. However, the most influential factor is the weather, as it affects all other conditions on the mountain.
Located within an equatorial climate zone, Kilimanjaro does not experience the typical four seasons. Instead, it has two main periods: wet and dry seasons. The rainy months usually occur in April to May and again in November. As with many tropical regions, it is difficult to predict the exact start and end of rainfall. The remaining months are generally considered the dry season, often bringing sunny days, although clear skies are never completely guaranteed.
Mount Kilimanjaro Hiking By Seasons
There are two main climbing seasons: July-August-September and January-February. Many travelers have their summer or Christmas holidays at that time, while the weather conditions for climbing Mount Kilimanjaro are perfect.
Rainy seasons scare off the majority of climbers. In April, May and November the probability of trekking under the drizzle is very high. Rain softens the soil and makes the rocks slippery, turning your climb into a slower and more risky adventure. However, landscape photographers particularly love the rainy season in Tanzania. More precipitation means more snow on the peak, which makes it possible to shoot the snow-capped summit of Kilimanjaro. Moreover, it is the only time when you can avoid the “rush hours” on the busy Mount Kilimanjaro routes, and enjoy some privacy walking virgin-snow-covered treks.
Best month to climb Kilimanjaro
April–May: This period marks the “long” rainy season, starting in late March and lasting until mid-May. April is also the coldest month of the year in Tanzania. Fewer climbers attempt Kilimanjaro during this time, but there is a high likelihood of encountering rain on the trails.
June–July: Rainfall gradually decreases, making the weather relatively dry and clear, although nights remain cold. June is often quiet, sunny, and underrated as a climbing month. It offers excellent conditions and nearly private trekking routes. As July progresses, the number of climbers increases, and trails begin to get busier.
August–September (Peak Season): These months offer the best climbing conditions. Days are clear and slightly warmer than June and July. The forest and moorland zones may still experience clouds or rain, particularly on the Machame and Umbwe routes, but above the rainforest, the sun usually shines.
October: This is another overlooked month for climbing. Good weather often lasts until mid-October, and trails are much quieter, allowing a more private trekking experience. By late October, conditions become more unpredictable, but occasional rain showers can be managed with proper gear.
November: Known as the “short” rainy season, rainfall can extend into mid-December. Temperatures drop and mist often blankets the mountain, making climbing more challenging but also visually stunning. November is ideal for capturing breathtaking photos of Kilimanjaro’s mist-covered slopes and snow-capped peak.
December–January: The Christmas and New Year period is the second busiest season. Trails are crowded, and rain or clouds may appear at lower elevations, though higher zones are generally clearer.
Mid-January–Mid-March: These months are very popular due to balanced weather—moderately warm, mostly dry days with occasional rain. Rain chances increase toward late March as the long rainy season approaches.
