Marangu Route

Kilimanjaro Marangu Route

The Marangu Route on Mount Kilimanjaro is the mountain’s oldest and most established trekking path, often referred to as the “Coca-Cola Route” due to its historic reputation and the once-available soft drinks at the mountain huts along the way. It remains the only route on Kilimanjaro that offers dormitory-style hut accommodation for the entire climb, providing a more sheltered experience compared to camping routes.

Although it is commonly perceived as the “easiest” route because of its direct path and relatively gentle gradient, this is a misleading simplification. Its shorter itinerary can make acclimatization more difficult, which often results in a lower summit success rate compared to longer, more gradual routes. As such, the Marangu Route combines comfort and accessibility with a challenging altitude profile that climbers should carefully consider.

Highlights

Hut Accommodation Route – The only Kilimanjaro route with permanent mountain huts instead of camping.

Gradual & Direct Path – A well-defined trail with a steady ascent, often completed in fewer days.

Comfortable Facilities – Basic dormitory-style huts provide shelter, dining areas, and simple amenities.

Popular “Coca-Cola Route” – One of the most well-known and accessible routes, favored by beginners.
