Full Tour Details

Day 1: Dar es Salaam – Flight to Kigoma

Your adventure begins with a scheduled flight from Dar es Salaam to Kigoma, a charming lakeside town on the shores of Lake Tanganyika. Upon arrival, you will be warmly welcomed by your professional safari guide and transferred to your hotel.

Spend the afternoon relaxing and preparing for the incredible journey ahead. In the evening, enjoy dinner followed by an informative storytelling session where your guide will introduce the history, wildlife, and unique experiences awaiting you in Mahale Mountains National Park.

Day 2: Kigoma – Mahale Mountains National Park

After breakfast, depart by road for Bilenge, a scenic journey of approximately seven hours through western Tanzania’s beautiful landscapes and traditional villages.

Upon arrival, board a boat and cruise across the pristine waters of Lake Tanganyika for approximately 55 minutes. As you approach Kasiha, witness the breathtaking sight of the Mahale Mountains rising dramatically from the lake’s shoreline.

After check-in at the TANAPA Bandas located directly on the beach, enjoy dinner while listening to fascinating stories about the park’s history, local communities, chimpanzee research, and ongoing conservation efforts.

Day 3: Chimpanzee Trekking Adventure

Wake up to the sounds of nature and enjoy an early breakfast before embarking on your first chimpanzee trekking experience accompanied by experienced TANAPA rangers.

Venture deep into the rainforest in search of the famous Mimikire chimpanzee group, one of the most habituated chimpanzee communities in Africa. Trek durations vary depending on the chimpanzees’ movements, but the reward is extraordinary as you observe these intelligent primates feeding, grooming, playing, and interacting in their natural habitat.

After lunch, spend the afternoon at leisure. Explore nearby waterfalls, enjoy a refreshing swim in Lake Tanganyika, or simply relax along the tranquil shoreline.

Day 4: Chimpanzee Trekking & Sunset Dhow Cruise

After lunch and some relaxation by the lake, embark on a magical sunset dhow cruise on Lake Tanganyika. As golden light reflects across the water, watch for hippos, crocodiles, and a variety of birdlife while enjoying spectacular views of the surrounding mountains.

Lake Tanganyika, the second-deepest freshwater lake in the world, offers a unique blend of stunning scenery, abundant wildlife, and traditional fishing culture that creates a truly unforgettable atmosphere.

Day 5: Mahale Mountains – Return to Kigoma

After breakfast, begin your return journey to Kigoma along the scenic shores of Lake Tanganyika.

Arrive in the evening and enjoy a relaxing dinner at your hotel while reflecting on the remarkable experiences of the past few days.
