Tour Overview

This 7-day journey is one of the most exclusive safari experiences in Africa, taking you deep into the untouched western circuit of Tanzania where few travelers venture. It combines the raw, predator-rich plains of Katavi National Park with the lush rainforest ecosystems of Mahale Mountains National Park, home to wild chimpanzees along the shores of Lake Tanganyika.

The experience is designed for true explorers seeking authenticity, privacy, and diversity. In Katavi, you witness dramatic wildlife interactions in complete isolation, while in Mahale, you transition into a tranquil world of forest trekking, primate encounters, and lakeside relaxation. This safari offers a rare contrast of ecosystems and experiences, making it ideal for photographers, wildlife enthusiasts, and travelers looking for something far beyond the ordinary safari route.

Day 1: Arrival in Katavi – Entering Tanzania’s Wild Frontier

Your journey begins with a scenic charter flight into Katavi National Park, offering breathtaking aerial views of endless wilderness, rivers, and floodplains stretching far beyond the horizon. Upon landing, you are welcomed by your guide and transferred to your lodge or tented camp, carefully positioned in the heart of the park.

After a short rest and lunch, you head out for your first afternoon game drive. This introduction to Katavi reveals just how untouched and raw this ecosystem is. You may encounter large elephant herds moving slowly through the bush, giraffes feeding on acacia trees, and antelope species scattered across the plains. As the sun begins to set, the golden light transforms the landscape into a photographer’s dream. Returning to camp, you enjoy dinner under the stars, with distant sounds of lions and hyenas echoing through the night.

Day 2: Full-Day Safari Across Katavi’s Legendary Floodplains

Today is dedicated to exploring Katavi’s iconic floodplains, particularly around the Katuma River and seasonal lakes. After an early breakfast, you set out as the bush comes alive with morning activity. This is the best time to witness predators on the move and herbivores gathering at water sources.

The floodplains are known for hosting enormous buffalo herds, often numbering in the hundreds or even thousands. These gatherings attract predators, and with luck, you may witness lions stalking or resting nearby. Hippos crowd into shrinking pools, creating intense and noisy scenes, while crocodiles lie motionless along muddy banks.

You enjoy a picnic lunch in a shaded area within the park, surrounded by pure wilderness with no crowds or noise. In the afternoon, your guide takes you deeper into remote sections where wildlife encounters feel completely private. The day ends with a slow drive back to camp as the sky turns orange and purple, offering stunning sunset views.

Day 3: Remote Exploration & Walking Safari Experience

This day offers a more intimate connection with nature. After a relaxed breakfast, you head out for a game drive into less-visited areas of Katavi, where the sense of isolation becomes even more profound. Wildlife here behaves naturally, undisturbed by frequent human presence.

Later in the morning, you may take part in a guided walking safari (where permitted), accompanied by an armed ranger. Walking through the bush changes your entire perspective—you begin to notice animal tracks, plants, insects, and the subtle details of the ecosystem that are often missed from a vehicle. Your guide explains survival techniques, animal behavior, and the interconnectedness of the environment.

In the afternoon, you return to vehicle-based game drives, focusing on predator activity and river ecosystems. As evening approaches, you head back to camp for a relaxed dinner and storytelling around the campfire, sharing the day’s highlights.

Day 4: Sunrise Safari – Journey to Mahale Mountains

Your morning begins early with a sunrise game drive, one of the most rewarding times in the bush. Predators are still active, and the soft light creates perfect conditions for photography. After breakfast, you begin your journey to Mahale Mountains National Park via light aircraft or a combination of road and boat transfer.

As you approach Mahale, the scenery dramatically changes from open savannah to lush green mountains rising directly from the shores of Lake Tanganyika. Upon arrival, you check into your beachfront lodge, where white sands and crystal-clear water create a completely different atmosphere from Katavi. The afternoon is spent unwinding—swimming, relaxing, or simply enjoying the peaceful surroundings.

Day 5: Chimpanzee Trekking in the Mahale Rainforest

After an early breakfast, you join experienced trackers for one of Africa’s most extraordinary wildlife experiences—chimpanzee trekking. Entering the dense rainforest, you follow calls, broken branches, and fresh tracks as you search for a habituated chimpanzee group.

The trek can take time and requires patience, but the reward is unforgettable. Once the chimpanzees are located, you spend an hour observing them up close—watching them groom, feed, play, and interact socially. Their human-like behavior creates a deeply emotional and unique experience.

After returning to camp, you enjoy a well-deserved rest. The afternoon is free for relaxation by the lake, where you can swim, kayak, or simply take in the serenity of this remote paradise.

Day 6: Second Trekking Experience & Lakeside Exploration

Today offers another opportunity to trek into the forest, often exploring a different area or following the chimpanzees as they move through their territory. Each trek is unique, with new behaviors and interactions to observe.

Alternatively, you may choose a slower-paced day enjoying the natural beauty of Lake Tanganyika. Activities include kayaking along the shoreline, snorkeling in clear waters, or guided forest walks to discover birds, butterflies, and smaller primates.

In the evening, you enjoy a peaceful sunset over the lake, with the mountains casting reflections on the water. Dinner is served in a relaxed setting, often right on the beach, creating a perfect end to your day.

Day 7: Departure – Return to Kigoma

On your final day, you wake up to the gentle sounds of the lake and forest. After breakfast, you board a boat transfer back to Kigoma, enjoying your last views of Mahale’s dramatic landscapes. The journey offers a moment to reflect on the diversity of experiences—from Katavi’s raw wilderness to Mahale’s tranquil rainforest and chimpanzee encounters.

Upon arrival in Kigoma, you connect to your onward flight or continue your travels, marking the end of a truly unforgettable Western Tanzania safari.
