Tour Overview

The Ngorongoro Crater is one of Africa’s most famous wildlife destinations, often hailed as a “natural wonder of the world.” It is the world’s largest intact and unfilled volcanic caldera, forming a natural amphitheater teeming with an extraordinary concentration of wildlife. The crater floor is home to over 25,000 large animals, including the “Big Five” – lion, elephant, buffalo, rhino, and leopard. Its permanent water sources and lush grasslands support a diverse and dense animal population year-round, making for unparalleled game viewing. The crater’s unique, self-contained ecosystem and the sheer volume of wildlife make it a must-see for any safari enthusiast.

Day of Adventure

Your journey begins early in the morning with a 2 to 3-hour drive from Arusha or Moshi, gradually ascending into the scenic highlands of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Along the way, you’ll pass rolling hills, Maasai villages, and lush landscapes before reaching the crater rim.

From the rim, you are treated to a breathtaking panoramic view of the Ngorongoro Crater before descending about 600 meters down to the crater floor. This marks the start of a full-day game drive in one of Africa’s most remarkable wildlife habitats.

Inside the crater, your guide carefully navigates the tracks in search of abundant wildlife. You may encounter large herds of wildebeest, zebras, and gazelles, along with elephants, hyenas, and prides of lions. With a bit of luck, you might also spot the rare and endangered black rhino in its natural environment.

At midday, you pause for a picnic lunch at a designated site, often near a hippo pool or along the shores of Lake Magadi, where flamingos and other waterbirds can be seen gathering.

In the afternoon, your exploration continues across different habitats within the crater before you begin the ascent back up the steep crater wall. From there, you drive back to your hotel, ending a truly unforgettable day filled with extraordinary wildlife encounters and dramatic landscapes.
