Tour Overview

Venture deep into the heart of western Tanzania and discover the untamed beauty of Katavi National Park, one of Africa’s most remote and least-visited safari destinations.

Far from the busy safari routes, Katavi offers a rare opportunity to experience wildlife in its purest form. Vast floodplains, seasonal rivers, and endless horizons create a dramatic stage where enormous buffalo herds, elephants, lions, hippos, crocodiles, and countless other species thrive in near-total isolation.

This journey is designed for travelers seeking authentic wilderness, exceptional wildlife encounters, and the feeling of exploring a place where nature still reigns supreme.

Best Time: June to November, when wildlife congregates around the Katuma River and floodplains, creating some of Tanzania’s most spectacular game-viewing opportunities.

Day 1 – Arrival in Katavi

Into the Untouched Wilderness

Your adventure begins with a scheduled domestic flight from Dar es Salaam to Mpanda, the gateway to the wild landscapes of western Tanzania.

Upon arrival, you will be welcomed by your guide before embarking on a scenic drive of approximately 45 minutes to Katavi National Park.

After completing registration at the park headquarters, your safari begins immediately with a game drive en route to your camp.

The first impressions of Katavi are unforgettable. Vast open plains stretch toward the horizon, dotted with towering palms and scattered acacia trees. Herds of buffalo move across the landscape while elephants wander quietly through the woodlands. Giraffes browse peacefully among the trees as birds fill the skies above.

Arrive at Katavi Wildlife Camp for a warm welcome and lunch.

Later in the afternoon, head back into the wilderness for your first dedicated game drive.

As the day cools, wildlife becomes increasingly active. Lions may emerge from the shade, elephants move toward water sources, and the floodplains come alive with activity.

As the sun sinks below the horizon and paints the sky with shades of orange and gold, return to camp for relaxation and dinner beneath the African night sky.

Day 2 – Across the Legendary Katuma Floodplains

Full Day Big Game Safari

After breakfast, depart for a full day of exploration within one of Tanzania’s most remarkable wildlife ecosystems.

Today’s safari focuses on the famous Katuma River and the surrounding floodplains—the lifeline of Katavi National Park.

During the dry season, these areas attract extraordinary concentrations of wildlife. Thousands of buffalo gather across the plains, while hippos crowd into shrinking pools and crocodiles wait patiently along muddy riverbanks.

The abundance of prey attracts predators, making Katavi one of the best places in Tanzania to search for lions and other carnivores.

Throughout the day, your guide will lead you through a variety of habitats, from open floodplains to miombo woodlands where elephants, elands, giraffes, and numerous antelope species can be found.

Enjoy a picnic lunch beneath the shade of a tree in the heart of the wilderness before continuing your afternoon exploration.

Every corner of Katavi offers a new story, a new encounter, and a deeper appreciation for one of Africa’s last truly wild landscapes.

As the afternoon light softens, enjoy a scenic drive back to camp while watching the wilderness settle into evening.

Day 3 – Walking the Wilderness

Nature on Foot & Afternoon Safari

This morning offers a completely different perspective of the African wilderness.

Guests may choose to join a Guided Walking Safari accompanied by an armed ranger.

Unlike a traditional game drive, walking through the bush allows you to experience nature through all your senses. Follow animal tracks, learn about medicinal plants, observe insects and birds up close, and gain a deeper understanding of the delicate balance that sustains this ecosystem.

Walking in Katavi is not simply about seeing wildlife—it is about becoming part of the landscape, even if only for a few hours.

After the walk, return to camp for a hearty breakfast and time to relax.

Spend the middle of the day enjoying the peaceful surroundings of the camp. Wildlife is often seen moving nearby, and the quiet atmosphere provides an opportunity to truly absorb the spirit of Katavi.

Later in the afternoon, embark on another game drive, exploring different areas of the park and searching for species not yet encountered during the previous days.

As sunset approaches, pause to appreciate the silence, vastness, and beauty that make Katavi such a special place.

Day 4 – Farewell to Katavi

Final Safari & Return to Dar es Salaam

Enjoy a relaxed breakfast while listening to the sounds of the wilderness one final time.

After check-out, begin your journey back toward Mpanda with a final game drive en route through Katavi National Park.

Keep your camera ready, as the last sightings are often among the most memorable. Whether it is a herd of elephants crossing the road, a lion resting beneath a tree, or a fish eagle soaring overhead, Katavi always seems to save something special for the end.

Upon arrival at Mpanda Airport, board your scheduled domestic flight back to Dar es Salaam.

As the aircraft lifts above the vast wilderness below, you leave carrying more than photographs.

You leave with memories of untamed landscapes, dramatic wildlife encounters, and the rare privilege of experiencing one of Africa’s last truly wild safari destinations.
