Day 1 – Journey to Mahale

Kigoma – Mahale Mountains National Park

After breakfast, depart Kigoma and begin one of Tanzania’s most scenic journeys. The route winds through traditional villages, rolling hills, palm plantations, and remote landscapes along the shores of Lake Tanganyika.

Along the way, cross the legendary Malagarasi River by ferry before continuing toward Mahale Headquarters at Bilenge.

Upon arrival, complete park registration and board a boat transfer across the crystal-clear waters of Lake Tanganyika toward Kasiha.

As the forest-covered Mahale Mountains rise dramatically from the lakeshore, it becomes clear why this region is considered one of Africa’s hidden treasures.

Arrive at Kasiha Bandas in time to relax, enjoy dinner, and listen to the gentle sounds of the lake beneath the African night sky.

Day 2 – Chimpanzee Trekking Experience

Into the Forest of Mahale

After breakfast, meet your guide and chimpanzee trackers for a briefing before entering the forest.

The trackers begin searching for signs and vocal calls from the famous Mimikire chimpanzee community, one of the habituated groups that call Mahale home. As you follow forest trails beneath towering trees, your guide shares fascinating stories about chimpanzee behavior, family structure, communication, and daily life.

Once the chimpanzees are located, spend a memorable hour observing them in their natural environment. Watch family interactions, grooming sessions, playful juveniles, and dominant males moving through the forest canopy.

Returning from the forest, enjoy lunch and time to relax.

In the evening, unwind on the beach beside Lake Tanganyika as your guide shares stories about Mahale’s history, wildlife, and conservation journey.

Dinner & Overnight: Kasiha Bandas

Day 3 – Chimpanzees, Waterfalls & Sunset on the Lake

Another exciting morning begins with chimpanzee trekking in a different section of the forest, offering new opportunities to observe the chimpanzees and learn more about their complex social lives.

After lunch, set out on a guided walk to the beautiful Nsansa Waterfalls, hidden within the lush rainforest of Mahale. The peaceful surroundings, flowing water, and forest scenery create a perfect contrast to the morning’s adventure.

Later in the afternoon, board a boat for a Sunset Cruise on Lake Tanganyika.

As the sun slowly disappears behind the distant mountains, the lake transforms into shades of gold and orange, creating one of the most unforgettable moments of the safari.

Dinner & Overnight: Kasiha Bandas

Day 4 – Another Day with the Chimpanzees

Today offers another opportunity to explore the forests of Mahale and spend time searching for chimpanzees.

Each trek is unique, revealing different family groups, behaviors, and forest experiences. No two days with the chimpanzees are ever the same.

After lunch and a period of relaxation, enjoy a guided hike to the beautiful Kasiha Natural Pool.

Fed by clear mountain water flowing from the Mahale Mountains, the pool provides a refreshing place to swim and relax while surrounded by untouched nature.

Return to the bandas in the evening for dinner and relaxation beside the lake.

Dinner & Overnight: Kasiha Bandas

Day 5 – Leisure Day on Lake Tanganyika

Today is yours to enjoy Mahale at a slower pace.

Guests may choose an optional chimpanzee trek for another opportunity to visit the forest or spend the day enjoying the beauty of Lake Tanganyika.

Activities may include kayaking along the shoreline, swimming in the crystal-clear waters, relaxing on the beach, or visiting nearby fishing communities to learn about local life along the lake.

This day allows you to fully appreciate the peaceful atmosphere that makes Mahale so special—a place where forest, mountains, and lake meet in perfect harmony.

As evening falls, enjoy one final sunset over Lake Tanganyika and reflect on the unforgettable experiences of the past days.

Day 6: Return to Kigoma – Departure

After breakfast, board your boat transfer back to Bilenge Headquarters.

From here, begin the scenic drive back to Kigoma, once again passing through remote villages, rolling hills, palm plantations, and crossing the Malagarasi River by ferry.

Arrive in Kigoma in the afternoon and transfer to your hotel, lodge, or airport for your onward arrangements.

Though the journey ends, the memories of Mahale’s forests, chimpanzees, mountain streams, and the endless waters of Lake Tanganyika remain long after departure.
